As a solo instrument, the piano enjoys a broad and significant literature and an impressive history of virtuosic interpreters in both the classical and jazz repertoires. The pianist See Siang Wong is entirely at home in this tradition, which is why “Klavierstück 11”, composed for him, refers to it, among other things. The virtuosic piece is restricted sonically to what can be achieved by means of the keys and the three pedals, and is thus a respectful homage to the beauty of the piano’s musical hues. Yet it also treats that oh so familiar sound to a fresh hearing in a new mise-en-scène, as with nothing more than arrangement and a versatile harmonics unusual nuances are wrung from the instrument, and landfall is made on an expressive terra incognita. A work in ten parts, between stasis and kinesis, with sculptural effect and a robust corporeality.
